Will You Walk Beside Me? is a setting of a poem written by my mother, Darcie Toom. This slow piece is for SATB and incorporates text painting, hemiolas, and other musical ideas to portray the text.
Text:
When I walk through a new meadow of lilac, And the bright golden sun warms the earth, When the birds sing songs at the break of dawn, Will you walk beside me?
When the sun shines brighter and hotter, And I gaze across a still, dark pond, When the clouds roll lazily along, Will you walk beside me?
When the bright colored leaves fall and scrape across the walk, And the wind is chilling, yet alive with energy, When the sun sets low from crimson to ebony, Will you walk beside me?
When the cold, numb days come, and I see the light breaking into a new season, I will look to you and reach out my hand, Will you still be beside me? Dur. 3.5 min *below is a MIDI recording without the text. Look out for a performance in the future! The piece was originally scheduled for a Spring 2021 Recital, but due to COVID-19, the work does not have a set premiere yet.
