Sonata for Band is an adventure for an intermediate band. The majestic A theme starts sparsely in the alto saxophone, and it gradually takes over the entire ensemble before transitioning to the B theme. In the second theme, the music is lighter and smoother than the first. It begins in the woodwinds, but the majority of the ensemble enters in the second half for a fuller sound. After a slightly altered repeat of the exposition, the sonata continues to the development section. Here, tonalities shift and accompaniments change to create a feeling of push towards the final return of the two themes in the recapitulation. The piece finishes with a large tutti rhythm on the home chord.
