Roaring River is an octet (piano trio and wind quintet) inspired by my family’s favorite fishing spot. The flowing melody in the beginning and different passages for each instrument are meant to create the feeling of slowly moving water, and the faster section is meant to depict quick rapids crashing over waterfalls. The sparseness and slow pace of the slow section portrays the size of the “river” and makes the climax of the section (a “waterfall”) much more satisfying. In the second section, the bassline (normally in the piano, but it moves throughout the ensemble) creates continuous motion. The focus on a minor scale with fast-moving notes creates a sense of danger, as if one is white-water rafting. This section uses the different combinations of instruments in order to create suspense and the feeling of power, and it uses techniques such as augmentation (doubling the note lengths) to create a soaring melody over the chaos.
