Cumulonimbus is a band piece that travels through the fluffy yet frightening cumulonimbus cloud. The piece begins with a simple piano part and a couple of flowy flute and clarinet solos. As the piece progresses, however, the stormy aspect of the clouds becomes apparent. The piece modulates to minor, then everything builds to a major chord that depicts the sunlight coming through the storm. Immediately afterwards, though, the piece moves to a limping 8/8 time and Dorian mode. This portrays the inside of the storm cloud and the unpredictability that comes with it. After a ride through the storm, the listener comes out on the other side with a return of the beginning themes and solos.
