Theme and Variations for Flute and Cello (2021)
Theme and Variations for Flute and Cello is a modal piece written for the FNMC "Flute Plus One" 2021 competition. The main melody is smooth, slow, and mournful. As the piece progresses, the flute and cello parts interact and imitate one another more and more, adding complexity to the otherwise simple tune. The piece goes through several different variations. Throughout these variations, there are changes in tempo, texture, rhythm, meter, etc. Finally, the piece ends much like the beginning: softly with cello pizzicato.
