Neosho Snows, commissioned by Julia McCabe and dedicated to Galesburg Middle School in Galesburg, K.S., is a joyful winter piece with references to Christmas favorites. This piece contains flexible instrumentation with four parts, plus percussion. The piece begins with a church bell motif, and new instruments slowly build to the main melody. This main theme starts quietly, but it soon transforms into different instruments, textures, and dynamics. Suddenly, the darker second theme emerges. It is accompanied by an altered version of the “Greensleeves” theme. After these two ideas anxiously mix together, the original theme joins in for a busier texture. Finally, the church bell motif returns for the grand ending.
