Fantasia No. 1 is a solo flute work in a Baroque style. The improvisation influences contribute to the free-flowing nature of the piece. The work begins with a slow, mournful introduction. This syncopated pattern returns later in the piece as well. After the “Larghetto” section, the melody flourishes into the chaotic “Vivace” section. Here, the leaps and use of the harmonic minor scale create a tense atmosphere. Once the melody has modulated and ascended into the high register, it hits the brakes for a happy, waltz-like “Moderato” section. This energetic dance flows throughout the middle range of the flute. It concludes with a spooky modulation back to the “Vivace” section. After this return, the piece barrels to the end with explosive leaps to and from the high range.
